Shamans and healers

Shamans and healers

Only the shaman can talk to the gods or spirits, exchange information with ordinary mortals, and communicate with the souls of the dead on behalf of the living. The shaman is generally an exceptional character, both in appearance and in interpretative skills. He can be a poet, a mystic, a sage, a doctor, a guardian of the tribe, and a storyteller.

The person must “receive the call”, live a religious experience and be initiated into the corresponding mysteries in order to become a shaman. His physical and mental pattern completely changes as a result of symbolic death and resurrection. During the period of initiation, the novice perceives the spirits of the universe and leaves his body to travel through the heavens and the underworld as a spirit. In that place, the different spirits will be presented to him and he will find out which of them he should address in subsequent trances.

Individuals who lack all of the shamanic qualities are simply referred to as "doctors or healers". The shaman can take it out and heal the patient because the disease was believed to be caused by a evil spirit that had entered the victim's body. In a special ritual, he does it by playing his drum, balancing and singing, gradually increasing the sound and intercaling it with long sighs, gemstones and hysterical laughter.
