Russell Means

Oglala-ihanktonwan, a Sioux born in 1940 Russell Means is one of many militant Native Americans who came to prominence in the 1960s.

He provoked controversy by demonstrating that Indians are still an important part of American society at the turn of this century. The childhood experience of being transferred from a reservation school to California, where his Indianness was thrown in his face, partially shaped his career.

Until he met Dermis Banks, who co-founded the American Indian Movement in 1968, he became involved in drugs and crime. Means became a prominent figure in the national media and led numerous Movement demonstrations, most notably the occupation of Wounded Knee in 1973.

In addition, he has served as a defense attorney and has run for vice president of the United States.

He has acted in several films, including The Last of the Mohicans (1992) and Disney's Pocahontas (1995), playing the character Powhatan.

Means remains a leading advocate for Indian causes, even though he is no longer affiliated with the Movement.
